The Sunrise phase is designed to give legitimate Colombian and non-Colombian trademark owners the possibility to apply for second-level .CO domains prior to any other registrant. Both ASCII Domains and Spanish IDNs may be applied for during this phase. The Sunrise process can involve up to five stages:
During Sunrise A, only owners of Colombian trademarks may apply for a second-level .CO domain. The applicant has to be the holder of a trademark that obtained registered status from the Colombian trademark office on or before July 30, 2008.
In Sunrise B, application for a second-level .CO domain is open to trademark owners worldwide. The applicant has to be the holder of a trademark of national effect that was obtained on or before July 30, 2008.
Eligibility to participate in the Global Sunrise will be limited to holders of trademarks that:
During the Sunrise Phase, applicants for a .CO domain will be required to submit certain data to demonstrate that they legally qualify for the domain name applied for. The data required will include:
An independent validation will be carried out by the global consulting firm Deloitte and the Belgian law firm Laga to make sure that only rightful trademark owners receive a second-level .CO domain. The validation agents will use a defined process for checking the eligibility of the legal rights claimed as the basis of each Sunrise application. They will be using official national trademark databases and submitted documentary evidence.
Applications for .CO domains received within Local Sunrise (A) or Global Sunrise (B) will be treated as though they were received at the same time.
.CO domains for which only one application has been received and which are successfully verified according to .CO policies will be allocated to the applicant. If there is more than one qualified application for the same .CO domain during Local Sunrise (A) or Global Sunrise (B) an auction will be held between the applicants.
